What is couple’s therapy?

Relationship therapy, or couples counselling, provides space for couples to discuss their issues and find solutions to problems within their relationship.

are an essential part of our lives and close relationships bring many rewards, but they are also challenging. Being intimate with another person requires vulnerability and getting your needs met while also meeting your partner’s needs is difficult. Spending a lot of time with your partner means there is a lot of opportunity for conflict!  All relationships face challenges.  How we deal with these challenges is important and plays a significant role in how we experience close personal relationships and in how we resolve conflicts when they arise.

When a relationship is at breaking point it can seem as if separation or divorce is your only option. But talking through your problems together with a trained relationship counsellor, can help you get to the heart of your conflicts and come to value each other’s beliefs and feelings.

I am trained in a development model of relationships and have a psychological awareness of the different stages of relationships and where couples can get stuck. I offer a safe, supportive, and appropriately challenging environment to explore your relational difficulties and the hidden dynamics in your relationships. Helping all parties to understand their unconscious and subconscious behaviours and how these can influence all their relationships can help facilitate understanding of yourself and others, break unhelpful patterns of relating and lead to permanent change.

Who is relationship / couples therapy for?

Relationship therapy focuses on improving communication and resolving conflicts between partners in a romantic relationship. Contrary to popular belief, couples therapy is not just for couples on the brink of divorce. In fact, couples therapy can benefit any couple who wants to improve their relationship, regardless of the severity of their problems.

Here are some reasons why couples therapy may be a good fit for you:

  • Communication is the foundation of any healthy relationship. However, when communication breaks down, it can lead to misunderstandings, hurt feelings, and resentment. Couples therapy can help you and your partner learn how to communicate more effectively, listen actively, and express your thoughts and feelings in a constructive waye

  • Disagreements and conflicts are a normal part of any relationship. However, if they are not resolved in a healthy way, they can escalate into bigger issues that can damage the relationship. Counselling can provide you with the tools to manage conflict more effectively and find solutions that work for both partners.

  • Trust is an essential component of any relationship. However, if trust has been broken, it can be difficult to rebuild.  Therapy can help you and your partner work through trust issues, such as infidelity, and learn how to rebuild trust and strengthen your bond.

  • Life transitions, such as getting married, having a baby, or moving to a new city, can be stressful and put a strain on your relationship. Relationship therapy can help you and your partner navigate these transitions and adjust to changes in your relationship.

  • Intimacy is an important part of any romantic relationship. However, when intimacy is lacking or becomes a source of conflict, it can cause problems in the relationship. A relationship therapist can help you and your partner address intimacy issues, explore what is preventing you from connecting on a deeper level, and find ways to reignite the spark in your relationship.

Couples therapy is for any couple who wants to improve their relationship, regardless of the severity of their problems. Whether you are experiencing communication problems, conflict resolution issues, trust issues, life transitions, or intimacy issues, couples therapy can help you and your partner work through your problems and strengthen your relationship.
